Fiber internet companies now have more rules to follow after the city of Albuquerque issued new rules.
Fiber optic construction is supposed to help with high-speed internet. Within the past few weeks, several people have sent in complaints regarding the fiber optic construction process, stating it's leaving behind a mess in their yards, breaking water lines and other concerns.
"If they want accountability, somebody from the city needs to be checking up on us. You know, having reporters and people complaining that's not the people to do that," said Mike Bernard, who lives in Albuquerque.
Bernard agrees with the internet upgrade but tells KOAT he was never given any notice when it happened in his front yard.
"The first hole was OK because it was just a hole. There wasn't anything there. The second hole over there, they hit my sprinkler system and busted a riser. I went in there, I took pictures of it, and then, they covered the holes the next day," said Bernard.
The city's new rules are:
● Proof of clear written notice before work begins
Going forward, Bernard hopes to see the city use a hands-on approach.
"I think people would be happy to see somebody from the city checking up on this, because right now we see them all sitting in the city hall, not doing anything. You know, we don't see them out here. How do they know what's going on?" said Bernard.
We reached out to all three companies who are permitted to install fiber optic, Ezee Fiber sent us this statement:
"We are just beginning to study the new rules to determine their impact and will share any conclusions we reach at the appropriate time. We will continue to work closely and cooperatively with City officials on their plan to modernize fiber internet infrastructure, so New Mexicans have access to this state-of-the-art technology as soon as practical.”
If you have problems, you are asked to contact the internet service provider. If you still need help, contact 311.
