A number of Devon’s work hubs will be marking International Coworking Day on Wednesday 9 August by inviting people to give coworking a try.

The day is an opportunity for people to experience coworking for themselves and see that they are far more than simply a desk space. The many advantages provided by Work Hubs include flexible working, organic networking and collaborative opportunities with like-minded people.

Among the coworking spaces within the Devon Work Hub network offering free trial coworking days for non-members on 9 August are:

Coworking Devon in Buckfastleigh offers free trial days all year round, Monday to Friday, and on 9 August it will be offering a free day for members as well as non-members. Email [email protected] or call 01364 654267. Castle Hill Work Hub in Great Torrington also offers free trial days throughout the year. For more information contact [email protected] .

Desk space at all of the venues is limited so places are available on a first-come-first served basis and need to be reserved in advance.

Jack Dicker, founder of CoWorking Devon in Buckfastleigh, said: “Come and experience the community of coworking yourself. Whether a member or non-member, CoWorking Devon is offering a free day of coworking on Wednesday 9th of August to celebrate International Coworking Day 2023. Liz Finnie, Director of The Generator Hub in Exeter, said: “We will by offering non-members a complimentary hot desk trial, inviting them to experience the magic of coworking first hand. If you have ever wondered whether coworking could work for you, whether you are looking for individual, team, or meeting space in the future, then please reach out to us! If you would like to join our welcoming and inclusive community, then we’d love to hear from you.”

Claire Lewis, from The Hub at The Bookery in Crediton, said: “The growth in coworking has greatly improved the ability of people to work more flexibly. Shared workspaces can be an inspiring, budget-friendly, and adaptable solution for individuals and businesses. The Hub at The Bookery is used by both locals and visitors to the area who are looking for a productive, distraction-free, friendly place to work with unique opportunities for collaboration and networking.”

Stacey Sheppard, founder of Devon’s first female coworking space, The Tribe, in Totnes, said: “International Coworking Day is such a great opportunity to celebrate all the great facilities and opportunities that coworking and the Devon Work Hubs network provides to businesses and entrepreneurs locally. The world of work has changed dramatically in the past few years and the way that we are working is now far more flexible and hybrid so these third spaces are really coming into their own as we search out ways to find a happy balance between the freedom of working remotely and that basic human need for connection and community. Many friendships are forged in coworking spaces.

“For International Coworking Day we will be offering free coworking to anyone who wants to come along on 9 August. As it also happens to be Afternoon Tea Week we will also be enjoying a typical Devon cream tea in the afternoon. Spaces are limited and will need to be booked. But we’d love to see some new faces if you are looking to try out coworking for the first time.”

Councillor Rufus Gilbert, Cabinet Member for Economic Recovery and Skills, said:

“Coworking offers a range of benefits for businesses, entrepreneurs, freelancers, self-employed people and hybrid workers. Whether you’re looking to change your working environment to boost productivity and reduce loneliness or if you’re seeking business support and networking opportunities, Devon Work Hubs can provide everything from hot desks to meeting rooms. If you’ve ever thought about coworking but haven’t managed to give it a go, International Coworking Day could be the perfect time to try something new.”
